The Instrument: Scherl & Roth Model 61
The Scherl & Roth Model 61 is built for the moment a student stops being a beginner and starts being a musician.
Fully hand-carved from solid spruce and flamed maple — with seasoned ebony fittings and a hand-applied spirit varnish — the 61 delivers the tonal depth and projection that advancing technique demands. The flamed maple back, sides, neck, and scroll are not decorative. Properly seasoned flamed maple resonates differently — with a clarity and focused projection that plain maple cannot match.
This is the instrument that makes a student's teacher say: "Now I can hear what you're really doing."

Paolo's Recommendation
"The Scherl & Roth 61 is the step-up instrument I recommend when a student's technique has genuinely outgrown their first violin — and their teacher agrees.
The fully hand-carved flamed maple construction gives the 61 a focused, projecting tone that rewards advancing bow technique immediately. Students moving from a standard student instrument to the 61 consistently report the same thing: they can suddenly hear themselves more clearly. That clarity is not a coincidence — it is the natural result of a properly carved, properly seasoned instrument responding honestly to what the bow is doing.
The Thomastik Dominant strings and seasoned French maple bridge arrive from our workshop ready to perform. This instrument does not need to be broken in. It is ready the moment it arrives."
