The Instrument: Scherl & Roth Model 81

The Scherl & Roth Model 81 is where the student violin conversation ends — and the artist conversation begins.

Fully hand-crafted from highly-flamed seasoned maple and a carefully selected seasoned spruce top, the 81 is finished with a hand-applied amber-brown oil varnish that deepens with age and use. The result is an instrument with the visual presence and tonal authority of instruments that cost significantly more — and the documented heritage of two of history's greatest violin makers.

The Model 81 is available in two historically significant patterns:

The Stradivari Pattern — based on the geometry of Antonio Stradivari's golden period instruments (1700–1720). Characterized by a focused, brilliant tone with exceptional clarity across all registers. The pattern favored by soloists who demand projection and definition.

The Guarneri Pattern — inspired by the instruments of Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesù, whose violins are considered by many to rival or surpass Stradivari's finest work. Characterized by a darker, more powerful tone with a raw, complex resonance. The pattern favored by musicians who want an instrument with depth and authority.

The choice between these two patterns is not merely aesthetic — it is a decision about your sound identity.

Who This Instrument Is For

  • Students entering Suzuki Book 4 and beyond
  • Students preparing for NYSSMA Level 4 and above (NY), NJMEA Region Orchestra (NJ), TMEA All-Region and All-State (TX), FMEA District and State (FL), and CMEA Festival ratings (CA)
  • Students preparing for All-County, All-State, and conservatory auditions
  • Serious adult musicians enrolled in private study or the AVS Adult Academy
  • Musicians ready for an instrument that defines their sound rather than merely supporting it

The "Masterclass" Upgrade: G. Werner German Bow

For the musician performing at this level we recommend the German Masterclass configuration. The G. Werner Pernambuco bow offers a nuanced response for off-the-string strokes — spiccato, sautillé, ricochet — that carbon fiber simply cannot replicate. At the level of repertoire the Model 81 is designed for, the bow is not an accessory. It is half the instrument.

  • The Stick: Select seasoned pernambuco — round or octagonal
  • The Frog: Premium ebony with Parisian eye, fully nickel-silver lined
  • The Grip: Professional leather with nickel-silver wire grip
  • The Hair: Finest Mongolian horsehair for superior grip and tone

Paolo's Recommendation

"The Scherl & Roth 81 gives a serious student something that almost no instrument at this price point offers: a genuine choice of maker model. This is not a marketing decision — it is a deeply personal one.

The Stradivari pattern produces a focused, brilliant tone that projects with clarity and definition. The Guarneri pattern produces something darker and more powerful — a raw, complex resonance that rewards a strong bow arm and advanced technique.

I recommend students preparing for All-State auditions, conservatory applications, or serious solo competition try both patterns before deciding. If you would like guidance on which pattern suits your playing style and repertoire, contact me directly. This is exactly the conversation I am here to have.

Strung with Thomastik Rondo — the same string used on instruments costing ten times the price — the 81 arrives from our workshop ready to perform at the highest level."
